Kochi: ONGC’s Jack-Up Rig Sagar Kiran is undergoing a comprehensive dry-docking and modernization programme at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), marking a major step forward in strengthening India’s offshore drilling capabilities. The upgrade drew high-level attention today as ONGC Chairman Arun Kumar Singh, Director (Technology & Field Services) Vikram Saxena, and CSL CMD Madhu S. Nair visited the shipyard to review the progress. Senior officers from both organizations attended the visit, highlighting the strategic importance of the project.
Major Upgrades for MODU 89 Compliance
The Sagar Kiran rig is being upgraded to meet Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU) 89 standards. The ongoing refit involves significant steel renewals, pipe replacements, accommodation upgrades, and overhauls of key drilling and operational equipment. These improvements are aimed at boosting operational efficiency, enhancing safety systems, and ensuring the rig’s readiness for demanding offshore exploration activities.
CSL Demonstrates Expanded Capabilities
During the inspection, the CSL senior team provided a detailed briefing on the project timeline, progress achieved so far, and upcoming engineering milestones. They also showcased the shipyard’s expanded dry-dock and ship-repair capacities at Kochi, which now support large-scale offshore rig refurbishments. This expansion enables India to handle complex offshore upgrades domestically, reducing dependence on foreign facilities.
Strengthening Domestic Offshore Infrastructure
The ongoing collaboration between ONGC and CSL reflects a shared commitment to enhancing India’s offshore energy infrastructure. The refit of Sagar Kiran is a critical element of ONGC’s broader fleet modernization programme, aimed at ensuring its offshore drilling units comply with stringent global standards and deliver safe, reliable, and efficient performance in the field.
