New Delhi – In a significant move toward boosting India’s domestic energy output, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vedanta Group to facilitate the early monetisation of the Jantapathar Gas Field, located in the Upper Assam Shelf South Block of the Assam & Assam Arakan (A&AA) Basin.
The strategic MoU, inked on July 22, marks a vital public-private collaboration aimed at overcoming longstanding infrastructure and market challenges. The agreement enables ONGC and Vedanta to jointly work on evacuating gas from the discovery well JP-1Z—previously held back from production due to the lack of surface facilities and a viable local gas market.
Shared Development Vision for a Strategic Resource

Under the agreement, both companies will collaborate on key techno-commercial aspects of the field. These include the division of reserves from the common reservoir, formulation of a cost-and-revenue-sharing model, and other mutually beneficial terms and conditions that will govern the development of the field.
The MoU signifies a crucial alignment between PSU and private energy players, ensuring that discovered resources are brought into production efficiently, transparently, and profitably for all stakeholders involved.
