Ahmedabad – In a major boost to India’s technological self-reliance in the energy sector, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has been granted a patent for its newly developed “Hydraulic Fracturing Fluid Composition.” The innovation, credited to ONGC’s Well Stimulation Services (WSS) team in Ahmedabad, introduces a sustainable, chloride-free formulation that enhances both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Eco-Friendly Alternative to Imported Chemicals

The patented formulation incorporates Polyamine as a clay inhibitor, offering a viable and eco-friendly substitute to imported Potassium Chloride (KCl). Unlike traditional solutions, this composition is free from chlorides, making it more environmentally benign and thermally stable under Indian geological conditions.

The development directly supports ONGC’s vision for self-reliant energy innovation while reducing dependency on imported chemical agents.

Field-Tested Across 20+ Operations

During FY 2023–24, ONGC successfully deployed this new fluid composition in more than 20 hydraulic fracturing operations. The formulation has proven its effectiveness under field conditions, demonstrating both technical efficiency and economic value in upstream stimulation workflows.

By prioritizing innovation that aligns with environmental standards, ONGC is not only enhancing its operational toolkit but also contributing to the global shift toward greener energy practices.

This achievement reflects the company’s broader strategy of integrating cost-effective technologies while reducing the ecological footprint of its exploration and production activities.
