The capital city of Bihar, Patna, is undergoing a massive transformation as part of a state-wide developmental push, with more than Rs 85,000 crore worth of projects either completed, inaugurated, or launched between March and June this year. These initiatives span infrastructure, urban development, sanitation, health, education, and social welfare — signaling the Nitish Kumar-led government’s major investment drive ahead of the upcoming elections.
Key Highlights of Infrastructure Development in Patna
The last phase of the JP Ganga Path project, stretching from Kangan Ghat to Didarganj, was inaugurated at a cost of Rs 3,831 crore, enhancing the scenic connectivity along the riverbank. Complementing this, India’s first double-decker flyover, constructed on Ashok Rajpath from Kargil Chowk to Science College, was completed at Rs 422 crore.
Another milestone is the Mithapur-Mahuli Elevated Road (8.7 km), completed at a cost of Rs 1,105 crore, connecting southern Patna to Punpun. The city also saw the inauguration of a Multi-Modal Hub near GPO Golambar (Rs 66.81 crore) and an underground subway worth Rs 84.83 crore, improving commuter movement in central Patna.
The Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport’s new terminal, built for Rs 1,200 crore, was also inaugurated, boosting air travel capacity. In a major health sector move, a part of the 1,117-bed PMCH new building was opened, part of a mega Rs 5,540 crore upgrade.
Drainage, Bridges, and Sanitation
A crucial six-lane Ganga bridge from Kacchi Dargah to Vidupur was inaugurated with a cost of Rs 4,988 crore. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated five STP plants under the Namami Gange project, and laid the foundation stone for drainage, water supply, and building infrastructure projects worth Rs 7,166 crore.
Key Projects Across Bihar
Beyond Patna, other districts received large-scale investments. On May 12, the CM launched repair works for 6,938 roads covering 12,105 km, worth Rs 8,716 crore. On May 19, the Agricultural Engineering College in Ara was launched at Rs 144.72 crore, and on May 20, foundation stones were laid for 1,327 urban development schemes worth Rs 1,002 crore.
In Begusarai, 48 new projects worth over Rs 200 crore were initiated. The government also launched a Rs 342 crore plan to restore the Ganga’s natural flow near Bakhtiyarpur on June 9.
Welfare Initiatives
On March 5, Rs 1,200 crore was directly transferred to the accounts of 3 lakh PMAY (Rural) beneficiaries. The CM released Rs 271 crore under the Chief Minister Kanya Utthan Yojana on June 13, further supporting social security pensions for girls.
Mega Announcements from the Prime Minister
The largest chunk of funding came on May 30, when PM Modi announced projects worth Rs 48,500 crore in Bikramganj, followed by Rs 5,900 crore worth of schemes in Siwan on June 20.
With Patna receiving special attention in this development blitz, the government is aiming to modernize Bihar’s capital as a model city, while the broader push reflects a strategy to drive regional equity, boost connectivity, and strengthen the state’s economic base.
