Bhuj: In a major boost to India’s green energy ambitions, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone for two transformative transmission projects and dedicated one completed project by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) in Gujarat, collectively worth ₹39,300 crore.
The ceremony, held in Bhuj, was attended by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal, Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, POWERGRID CMD R. K. Tyagi, and Director (Projects) Vamsi Rama Mohan Burra.
These projects are designed to significantly strengthen Gujarat’s power transmission infrastructure and facilitate the evacuation of large-scale renewable energy (RE) from the Khavda RE Park, one of India’s most ambitious green energy zones.
Project Dedicated to the Nation
The Prime Minister dedicated the “Transmission Network Expansion in Gujarat to Increase ATC from ISTS Part-C” project to the nation. Developed at a cost of ₹186 crore, this project will boost Gujarat’s grid capacity, especially in the Banaskantha region, and enable the transfer of RE power to Patan, Palanpur, Mehsana, and other load centers.
Foundation Stones Laid for Two Mega Projects
Transmission System for Evacuation of Additional 7 GW RE from Khavda (Phase-III Part B)
Implemented by POWERGRID Vataman Transmission Ltd., this ₹4,200 crore project will establish a 400 km 765 kV high-capacity transmission corridor from Khavda to Navsari via Halvad and Vataman.
Transmission System for 8 GW RE Evacuation from Khavda (Phase-V Part A)
A ₹35,000 crore project led by POWERGRID West Central Transmission Ltd., this includes a state-of-the-art 1200 km HVDC transmission line connecting Khavda (Gujarat) to Nagpur (Maharashtra), enabling evacuation of 6 GW green power to the national grid.
Powering India’s Green Transition
These projects form a crucial part of India’s efforts to integrate renewable energy into the national grid and are expected to significantly contribute to achieving the country’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030.
With a robust transmission network of 283 substations, 1,80,239 ckm of transmission lines, and 5,64,961 MVA transformation capacity (as of April 30, 2025), POWERGRID continues to maintain over 99.85% transmission system availability, leveraging cutting-edge technology, automation, and digital tools.
