Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address in Bhagalpur, praised Bihar’s remarkable progress in the dairy and fisheries sector, recognizing the transformative efforts of the Animal and Fisheries Resources Department. He highlighted how Bihar has evolved into a self-sufficient hub for milk production and fisheries development in the past few years.
It is known that Dr. Vijaylakshmi, who currently serves as the Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal and Fisheries Resources Department and the Managing Director of COMFED, has played a pivotal role in this transformation. Her first tenure, from 2016 to 2020, saw significant progress in the sector, and after taking charge again in June 2023, she has continued to drive impactful initiatives. Her leadership has ensured consistent progress, strengthening Bihar’s agricultural and rural economy.
On his visit to Bihar , PM Modi inaugurated the Barauni Milk Product Plant and the Motihari Centre of Excellence, both of which are expected to boost Bihar’s dairy and livestock sector. He commended COMFED, highlighting its remarkable achievement of reaching 30 lakh litres of daily milk procurement. Acknowledging the efficiency and dedication of the organization, he emphasized how it has significantly contributed to Bihar’s dairy infrastructure.
“The initiatives taken in Bihar to promote dairy farming are commendable. The Motihari Centre of Excellence will play a crucial role in developing superior indigenous cattle breeds, while the Barauni Milk Plant will provide immense benefits to farmers,” PM Modi stated. He also recognized the contributions of senior officials and policymakers in spearheading these projects.
Dr. Vijaylakshmi has been at the forefront of this transformation, implementing innovative programs such as door-to-door veterinary health services for cattle. Additionally, COMFED’s flagship brand, Sudha, is expanding rapidly, with a vision to establish itself as a leading national dairy brand.
Bihar has also achieved a significant milestone in the fisheries sector, making the state self-sufficient in fish production. Reflecting on his past visits, PM Modi recalled, “I remember visiting Bihar in 2013 and wondering why, despite having abundant water resources, the state had to rely on fish imports. Today, I am pleased to see that Bihar has achieved self-sufficiency in fisheries.”
With continued strategic efforts and strong leadership, Bihar is well on its way to becoming a key player in India’s dairy and fisheries industries, creating greater opportunities for farmers and rural entrepreneurs across the state.
