New Delhi: Power consumption across India saw a slight year-on-year increase of 2.6 percent in July 2025, reaching 153.63 billion units (BU), up from 149.65 BU in July 2024. The modest growth is largely attributed to reduced usage of cooling appliances caused by widespread heavy rains during the monsoon season.
Impact of Monsoon on Power Demand
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the monsoon arrived early this year, hitting the Kerala coast on May 24, 2025—eight days ahead of schedule. This resulted in heavy downpours across many parts of the country, leading to a drop in electricity consumption, particularly from cooling devices such as air conditioners and desert coolers.
Despite expectations for rising power demand, the peak power supply in July dipped slightly to about 220.59 gigawatts (GW), compared to 226.63 GW in July 2024. This decline reflects the impact of the cooler weather brought by the monsoon, which curtailed the use of energy-intensive cooling equipment.
Peak Power Demand Trends and Expectations
Earlier in the year, peak power demand had reached an all-time high of nearly 250 GW in May 2024, followed by a record 243.27 GW in September 2023. The government had estimated that peak power demand would reach 277 GW during the summer of 2025.
However, the highest peak power demand recorded so far this summer was 242.77 GW in June 2025, slightly below the previous year’s levels. Experts suggest that the timely arrival of the monsoon and the consequent reduction in temperatures helped moderate the expected surge in electricity usage.
Weather Patterns and Power Consumption
The IMD also forecasted hotter-than-usual temperatures across much of India from April to June 2025, with increased heatwave occurrences in Central, Eastern India, and the Northwestern plains. The heatwave arrived earlier in 2025 than in 2024, with regions like Konkan and coastal Karnataka experiencing heatwave conditions as early as late February.
Despite the early heatwave, the monsoon rains brought relief and suppressed the demand for power, especially from cooling appliances, leading to only marginal growth in electricity consumption in July.
Summary
- Power consumption in July 2025: 153.63 BU, up 2.6% YoY
- Peak power demand in July 2025: 220.59 GW, slightly down from 226.63 GW in July 2024
- Monsoon arrival: May 24, 2025, earlier than usual
- Effect: Heavy rains reduced power use from cooling appliances
- Heatwave: Arrived earlier in 2025 but was followed by timely monsoon rains
Experts continue to monitor weather and consumption trends as India progresses through the monsoon and summer seasons, balancing power supply with demand fluctuations driven by climatic conditions.
