New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Power, has successfully commissioned a critical communication infrastructure project titled “Establishment of Fibre Optic Communication System in Western Region (Additional Requirement)”.
The project has been declared commercially operational effective May 17, 2025, as per a regulatory filing made by the company on June 6, 2025.
The development is part of PGCIL’s ongoing efforts under its Master Communication Plan to enhance the nation’s digital and mobile communication infrastructure.
Strengthening the Digital Backbone
The newly commissioned Fibre Optic Communication System is designed to improve reliability, speed, and operational efficiency of communication networks across the Western Region. It marks a significant step in enhancing digital connectivity over the country’s vast power transmission infrastructure.
PGCIL, through its wholly owned subsidiary POWERGRID Teleservices Limited (brand name: PowerTel), is the only telecom service provider in India with a pan-India overhead optic fiber network, utilizing Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) mounted on power transmission lines.
Supporting National Telecom and Power Infrastructure
In addition to strengthening communication capabilities, the network offers transmission towers for mobile communication operators, contributing to the expansion of mobile coverage and internet connectivity in remote and underserved areas.
The successful implementation of this project reinforces Power Grid’s role in supporting the Government of India’s vision for a robust, interconnected, and technology-driven power and communication grid.
Power Grid’s Strategic Vision
Power Grid continues to act as a vital force in India’s energy and digital transformation journey, leveraging its extensive transmission infrastructure to offer telecom services, while ensuring grid resilience and modernization. The company’s integrated approach aligns with national objectives of Digital India, 24×7 Power for All, and smart grid development.
