The process to induct nine Jammu and Kashmir Police Services (JKPS) officers into the Indian Police Services (IPS) has been initiated and is expected to gain momentum after formal orders for posting one JKPS officer at IGP-equivalent rank and six officers at DIG-equivalent rank are issued in the coming days.
Officials revealed that initially, there were seven vacancies for JKPS officers’ induction into IPS, but with the recent cadre review of the AGMUT Cadre IPS, the number of Senior Duty Posts increased from 70 to 74, raising the induction vacancies to nine. Seven of these posts will be backdated to when they became vacant, while two new posts will take effect from January 1, 2025, when the revised IPS cadre review came into force. Currently, the quota for IPS posts is filled in a 67:33 ratio—67% by direct IPS recruits and 33% through induction of State Police Service officers. This ratio was restored by the BJP Government in 2014 after it was previously changed to 50:50 by the UPA Government.
Over the past three years, 44 JKPS officers have been inducted into IPS after a decade-long halt from 2011 to 2021 due to legal and administrative issues. Despite these inductions, many JKPS officers have remained at SSP rank without promotion due to delayed IPS inductions. Several officers retired as SSPs because of this backlog.
The upcoming inductions will benefit senior JKPS officers from the 1999 batch, whose promotion to IGP and DIG-equivalent ranks was recently approved. The government’s amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Police Services Rules allowed JKPS officers to be promoted to these posts temporarily, ensuring smoother career progression. Formal orders for these promotions are expected before Republic Day.
