New Delhi: Several notable appointments and promotions have taken place within the Indian judiciary, reflecting the continued evolution of the legal framework in India.
Mr Rajneesh Kumar Gupta, an esteemed judicial officer, currently serving as the Principal District & Sessions Judge (South-East) at Saket Courts Complex, New Delhi, has had a distinguished career in the Delhi Judicial Services. He has been appointed as Judge of Delhi High Court.
Born on May 21, 1966, Mr Gupta completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) and later pursued an LLB from Punjab University. He joined the Delhi Judicial Service in 1992 and further enhanced his qualifications with an LLM from Kurukshetra University. Mr Gupta’s rise through the ranks culminated in his promotion to the Delhi Higher Judicial Service in 2006, where he has continued to contribute significantly to the judicial system.
Ms Renu Bhatnagar, another highly respected judicial officer, has been appointed as a Judge of the Delhi High Court. Born in 1966, she graduated from M.D.U. Rohtak in 1986 before completing her LLB from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, in 1989. With a specialization in law, she later earned her LLM degree from Kurukshetra University in 2005. Smt. Bhatnagar joined the Delhi Judicial Services in 1992 and was promoted to the Delhi Higher Judicial Services in 2003.
Throughout her career, she has served in various courts including Civil, Criminal, Labour Laws, and Family Courts, and held prominent positions, including Joint Registrar on deputation from 2005 to 2007. She served as Principal Judge at the Family Courts and later as Principal District & Sessions Judge at Saket Courts. Currently, she is serving as the Principal District & Sessions Judge at Shahdra, Karkardooma Courts, since June 2023.
Meanwhile, Justice Biren Aniruddh Vaishnav, a Judge of the Gujarat High Court, has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of performing the duties of Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court during the absence of the current Chief Justice. Justice Vaishnav, born on May 22, 1963, in New Delhi, completed his B.A. in Economics from St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad, and his LLB from Sir L.A. Shah Law College. He started his legal career in 1987, initially practicing under Advocate Shri P V Hathi, before embarking on independent practice in 1995.
His expertise led him to represent various bodies, including the Gujarat Land Development Corporation and the Election Commission of India, where he served as Standing Counsel from 1999 to 2016. Justice Vaishnav was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court in April 2016 and was confirmed as a permanent Judge in March 2018. From February 18, 2025, until March 2, 2025, Justice Vaishnav will serve as the acting Chief Justice during the Chief Justice’s leave.
