Bhopal/New Delhi: In a significant leap toward self-reliance in rail infrastructure and advanced mobility solutions, BEML Limited has officially laid the foundation stone for its state-of-the-art Greenfield Rail Manufacturing Facility, named BRAHMA (BEML Rail Hub for Manufacturing), at Umariya near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
The high-profile foundation ceremony was presided over by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alongside Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Dr Mohan Yadav, and Ashwini Vaishnaw. The event was also attended by senior officials including Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Joint Secretary Dr Garima Bhagat, and BEML CMD Shantanu Roy.
A ₹1,800-Crore Investment in India’s Future Mobility
Spread over 148 acres, the BRAHMA facility is envisioned as a world-class rail manufacturing hub focusing on passenger coaches, metro cars, EMUs, Vande Bharat trainsets, and high-speed rail systems. The total investment of ₹1,800 crore will be infused in phases, with the project set for completion within two years.
Initial production capacity will range from 125 to 200 coaches per year, with an expansion plan to scale up to 1,100 coaches annually over the next five years.
Employment and Industrial Boost for MP
Speaking at the event, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh termed the project a “milestone in India’s development journey”, highlighting its alignment with the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat mission. “This facility will generate over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and strengthen India’s capability in modern rail manufacturing,” he said.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan underscored the project’s potential to provide quality employment for local youth, while Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav hailed it as a catalyst for industrial development and investment in the state.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the facility supports Indian Railways’ Vision 2030, which aims to transition to green, modern mobility solutions.
Sustainable & Smart Infrastructure
BRAHMA is being developed as a green factory with a strong emphasis on environmental standards. The plant will incorporate:
- Zero liquid discharge systems
- Rainwater harvesting
- Use of renewable energy
- Sustainable construction materials
