The Bihar government has initiated a mega development plan to transform Punauradham, the sacred birthplace of Maa Janaki (Goddess Sita), into a world-class religious and cultural destination. The holy site in Sitamarhi district will be upgraded to resemble the grandeur of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirtha Kshetra in Ayodhya, positioning it as a central hub in the Ramayana Circuit.
Rs 882.87 Crore Plan Approved
On July 1, the Bihar Cabinet approved a Rs 882.87 crore project for the comprehensive development of Punauradham. The ambitious scheme includes the renovation of the temple complex, construction of new facilities, improvement of tourism infrastructure, and a 10-year operation and maintenance plan. The objective is to enhance pilgrim experience and turn Punauradham into a major religious tourism center.
Tender Process to Attract Global Builders
To execute the project, the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) has invited national and international construction agencies to participate in the bidding process. The tender process begins on July 11, with a pre-bid meeting on July 24. The last date for tender submission is August 7 (3 PM), and bids will be opened on August 8. The selected agency must complete the project within 42 months.
Project Based on EPC Model
The development will follow the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model. The BSTDC will oversee the entire process, from tender publication to final execution. The goal is to create a spiritually enriching and tourist-friendly site while boosting the local economy and employment through enhanced tourism.
Cultural Renaissance through Ramayana Circuit
As part of the broader Ramayana Circuit initiative, Punauradham is set to become a focal point for devotees from India and across the world. With upgraded amenities and a revitalized temple environment, the project aims to highlight Bihar’s rich cultural and religious heritage, bringing global attention to its ancient spiritual sites.
Once completed, Punauradham is expected to mirror the spiritual significance and infrastructural excellence of Ayodhya, marking a new era in heritage tourism in Bihar.
