A case of mistaken identity created a flutter in Indian bureaucracy today. It also demonstrated the perils of fake news in the era of instant sensation and intense competition among social media handles.
One media organization flashed a report saying Punjab cadre IPS officer Mr Aditya Kumar (2018 batch), won a whopping prize of Rs 1 crore on Amitabh Bachchan hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati episode to be aired on August 21.
The report became viral with one media organization after another flashing same news with image grabs of the officer with Mr Bachchan. The stories said, the officer hailed from Uttarakhand, had ranked 630 in UPSC in 2017 and was presently posted as ASP Sangrur.
The only problem was that the actual winner on the show was indeed named Aditya Kumar but he wasn’t the posted as ASP Sangrur. Nor was he an IPS officer.
The actual winner was a CISF officer. Hailing from Uttarakhand, Aditya Kumar is currently posted in Gujarat at a thermal power plant. He is an deputy commandant in CISF. He achieved the 6th rank overall in India.
