Senior IPS officer RA Chandra Sekhar (IPS:1991:KL), currently posted as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), has been appointed as Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat.
As per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Saturday, June 14, 2025, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has cleared his appointment effective from the date he assumes charge on or after August 1, 2025, or until further orders.
Sekhar will succeed Harinath Mishra (IPS:1990:KL), who is set to retire on July 31, 2025.
The post of Secretary (Security) carries key responsibilities, including administrative oversight of the Special Protection Group (SPG), which provides security to the prime minister and his immediate family. The SPG also safeguards former prime ministers and their immediate families residing with them for up to five years post-tenure.
