The Meghalaya government has appointed Ms. Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang, a retired IAS officer of the 1989-batch (Assam-Meghalaya cadre) and former Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, as the new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of the state. The state cabinet approved her appointment for a three-year tenure on Wednesday, making her the first woman to hold this prestigious position.

The appointment comes as the post of Chief Information Commissioner had remained vacant since November 14, 2024, following the retirement of IPS officer H. Nongpluh. The state government had been actively searching for a suitable candidate for the crucial role, which plays a key part in upholding transparency and accountability in governance.
This marks Ms. Suchiang’s second post-retirement assignment, as she previously served as the Director General of the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute. With her vast experience in public administration and governance, her tenure as CIC is expected to strengthen the state’s Right to Information (RTI) framework and improve access to public information for citizens.
