The timing of the extension, issued right after the completion of the Mahakumbh, underscores the Uttar Pradesh government’s reliance on Mr. Awasthi’s expertise in administrative matters. Prior to his retirement on August 31, 2022, he was among the most influential bureaucrats in the state. Subsequently, on September 16, 2022, the UP government created the post of Advisor to assist the Chief Minister, appointing him to the role.
His initial tenure ended on February 29, 2023, but was extended from March 1, 2023, to February 29, 2024. The second extension lasted from March 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025. Now, for the third time, his term has been prolonged.
Before retiring, Mr. Awasthi held the position of Additional Chief Secretary, Home, playing a crucial role in shaping the state’s law and order policies.
