Rudrapur: the industrial hub of Uttarakhand, is set to get major relief from chronic traffic congestion as the much-awaited ring road project nears completion. Built at a cost of ₹1,092 crore, the 21-kilometer-long road is now over 98% complete and is expected to be fully operational by May 2026.
Project Revived After Years of Delay
The ring road project has had a long journey. Initially, the Public Works Department (PWD) proposed a 35-kilometer ring road several years ago. However, due to the lack of funds—specifically ₹1.25 crore required for a physical survey—the project was shelved.
Later, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) redesigned the project, reducing its length to approximately 21.3 kilometers. Construction began two years ago, giving new momentum to infrastructure development in the region.
Growing Traffic Pressure Led to Urgent Need
With the establishment of the SIDCUL industrial area in Rudrapur, traffic volume has increased significantly over the years. Heavy vehicles and industrial transport have been putting immense pressure on city roads, leading to frequent traffic jams.
The new ring road is expected to divert through-traffic away from the city, easing congestion and improving overall traffic flow.
Major Benefits for Commuters and Tourists
Local leaders, including trader representative Rajesh Kamra and MLA Shiv Arora, highlighted that travelers commuting between Delhi and Nainital face daily traffic jams in Rudrapur.
Once operational, the ring road will:
- Reduce travel time by approximately 30 minutes
- Provide a smoother route for tourists
- Eliminate frequent traffic bottlenecks within the city
Boost to Regional Development
The ring road will also benefit the SIDCUL industrial zone by allowing easier movement of goods and vehicles. Restrictions like “no entry” for heavy vehicles within city limits will no longer be a major issue, thereby enhancing industrial efficiency.
Completion Timeline and Current Status
According to NHAI Project Director Anchal Jindal, the construction work began in December 2024 and was originally scheduled for completion by March 1, 2026. While minor delays occurred, the project is now in its final stage.
With over 98% of the work completed, authorities are confident that the remaining construction will be finished by May 2026.
A Step Forward in Uttarakhand’s Infrastructure Growth
This project marks another significant milestone in Uttarakhand’s infrastructure development. Once completed, the Rudrapur ring road will not only ease traffic congestion but also enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and accelerate economic growth in the region.
