New Delhi / Kolkata: In a major step towards self-reliance in defence, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied 100% indigenous special grade steel for INS Androth, the Indian Navy’s newly commissioned Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC).
Commissioned today, October 6, 2025, INS Androth is the second in a series of eight ASW-SWC vessels being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE). The first in the series, INS Arnala, was inducted into naval service on June 18, 2025.
A Steel Backbone for India’s Naval Defence
SAIL, one of India’s largest public sector enterprises and a Maharatna company, has played a vital role in this strategic project by supplying the entire requirement of special-grade steel, including HR sheets and plates, for all eight ASW-SWC corvettes under construction.
The steel for these vessels has been sourced from SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela steel plants — reinforcing the national goal of building critical defence infrastructure using domestically produced materials.
INS Androth: A Milestone in Naval Modernisation
INS Androth is designed for anti-submarine warfare operations in shallow waters, enhancing the Indian Navy’s coastal defence capabilities. The commissioning of this vessel marks another step forward in India’s broader efforts under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) mission.
The addition of INS Androth strengthens not only India’s defence preparedness but also highlights the successful integration of indigenous manufacturing in strategic sectors.
SAIL’s Commitment to National Security
SAIL has consistently contributed to India’s defence sector by supplying indigenous steel for critical projects — from naval vessels to missile silos and border infrastructure.
“SAIL reaffirms its unwavering commitment to support India’s strategic defence needs by ensuring a robust supply of high-grade, indigenous steel,” the company stated in an official release.
By enabling projects like INS Androth, SAIL continues to be a pillar of India’s industrial and strategic backbone.
