New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) Chairman and Managing Director Amarendu Prakash has resigned from his post, effective April 2, 2026, following approval from the Ministry of Steel, a regulatory filing to the BSE confirmed. In the interim, Director (Personnel) Krishna Kumar (KK) Singh has been given additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director for three months, or until a regular incumbent is appointed.
Amarendu Prakash Resigns: Smooth Transition Ensured
In his resignation letter to the government, Amarendu Prakash requested an early release and mentioned that any notice pay may be adjusted against his separation dues. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring a smooth and orderly transition for the organization.
The resignation notice was originally tendered on January 2, 2026, and the Competent Authority approved it, marking the end of Prakash’s tenure on April 1, 2026. Consequently, he ceased to be a member of the SAIL Board from that date.
Prakash had assumed charge as SAIL Chairman on May 31, 2023, leading the organization through key initiatives in steel production, operational efficiency, and strategic investments.

Interim Leadership: Krishna Kumar Singh Takes Additional Charge
Following the resignation, the Ministry of Steel has assigned Director (Personnel) Krishna Kumar Singh the additional responsibility of Chairman and Managing Director of SAIL. Singh will hold this interim position from April 2 to July 1, 2026, or until a new CMD is appointed, whichever is earlier.
PESB Shortlists Ashok Kumar Panda for CMD Position
Meanwhile, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended Ashok Kumar Panda, SAIL’s Director (Finance), for the top post. Panda was among 10 shortlisted candidates interviewed for the role of Chairman and Managing Director. His appointment, once approved, will ensure continuity of leadership at India’s largest public-sector steel-making entity.
