New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s defence indigenization efforts, Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) on Wednesday announced that it has supplied the entire requirement of special grade steel for INS Arnala, the first in a series of anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts (ASW-SWC), which was inducted into the Indian Navy today.
INS Arnala is equipped to perform subsurface surveillance, search and rescue operations, and low-intensity maritime tasks, marking a new chapter in India’s coastal defence capabilities.

While the company did not disclose the quantity of steel supplied, it confirmed that the warship was built entirely using domestically produced special-grade steel from its plants, reinforcing the PSU’s continued commitment to Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat missions.
Track Record in Defence-Grade Steel Supply
SAIL has previously contributed critical steel components to several other major Indian Navy ships, including-
- INS Vikrant – India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier
- INS Vindyagiri and INS Nilgiri – Stealth frigates under Project 17A

The successful delivery of steel for INS Arnala further cements SAIL’s role as a strategic partner in India’s defence production ecosystem.
