New Delhi: As first reported by Indian Masterminds, the Government of India has appointed Sandeep Pradhan, a 1990-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS–Income Tax) officer, as a Whole-Time Member (WTM) of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a tenure of three years. The appointment fills a crucial vacancy on the board of the capital markets regulator, which plays a pivotal role in overseeing, supervising, and shaping India’s financial market ecosystem.
Extensive Administrative and Regulatory Experience
With more than three decades of experience in taxation, regulation, and administration, Pradhan is expected to significantly strengthen SEBI’s enforcement and surveillance functions. His IRS background positions him well to contribute to SEBI’s mandate of tackling market manipulation, financial fraud, and ensuring transparent capital market operations.

Key Government Assignments Held Earlier
Before joining SEBI, Pradhan served in several important roles in the Central Government. He is widely recognized for his tenure as the Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), where he oversaw major sports infrastructure, high-performance programs, and administrative reforms. His repeated postings to influential institutions reflect the government’s trust in his capabilities and clean administrative record.
Background on Sandeep Pradhan
Mr Pradhan, an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), has held several senior positions in the Income Tax Department and is currently posted as Chief Commissioner. Known for his administrative acumen and expertise in financial regulation and taxation, he has been involved in multiple policy-level initiatives related to tax compliance and fiscal reforms.
A Bureaucratic Power Couple
The appointment also draws attention for another notable reason—Pradhan’s wife, Suman Sharma, also a 1990-batch IRS (IT) officer, was appointed as a Member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in 2023. With both holding top constitutional and regulatory roles, the couple stands out as one of India’s most accomplished bureaucratic pairs.
Strengthening SEBI’s Leadership Structure
Pradhan’s induction is viewed as a timely move to strengthen SEBI’s leadership structure, especially as the regulator deals with rising complexities in financial markets—ranging from fintech regulation to market integrity issues. His presence is expected to bring stability and sharper regulatory oversight in SEBI’s functioning.
