Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu – Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal launched over ₹1,500 crore worth of infrastructure, renewable energy, and digital technology projects at the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Tuticorin. This major development is part of India’s strategy to transform its maritime ecosystem under the government’s Maritime Vision 2047 framework.
The VOC Port initiative aims to combine green energy, smart digital systems and enhanced cargo infrastructure to position itself as a future-ready maritime hub.
Details of VOC Port Green Digital Projects
A major highlight of the day was the inauguration of the VOC Maritime Heritage Museum, an immersive centre celebrating India’s maritime legacy and contribution of freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar. The museum is expected to boost tourism, increase community engagement and educate visitors on the rich maritime history of Tamil Nadu’s Coromandel Coast.
Sonowal laid foundation stones for several renewable energy initiatives at VOC Port, including:
- Solar and wind energy projects
- Battery storage systems
- Green hydrogen production facilities
- Advanced power infrastructure upgrades
VOC Port has already emerged as the first Indian port to produce and use green hydrogen on site, with pilot operations underway since late 2025 — a major step toward cleaner port operations and reduced carbon footprint.
Technology & Digital Modernisation
Underlining the push towards smart port infrastructure, the minister unveiled:
- India’s first Digital Twin deployment at VOC Port, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance and enhanced operational efficiency.
- Advanced anti-drone systems to strengthen port security.
These tech innovations will improve cargo handling and safety while reducing delays and improving turnaround times for vessels.

Projects inaugurated include upgrades to rail and road connectivity, and enhancements to power and cargo infrastructure that will help VOC Port serve as a key transshipment hub in South India.
The Outer Harbour project — aimed at accommodating larger vessels and increasing trade volumes — remains a central long-term priority.

Sonowal emphasized that these developments align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Maritime Vision 2047, which seeks to make India a self-reliant, green and technologically advanced maritime nation.
