SBI’s net interest income increased 15% year-on-year to ₹49,143 crore in Q2 FY27, compared with ₹42,847 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.
Net interest income represents the difference between the interest earned by a bank on its loans and investments and the interest paid on deposits and borrowings. The growth in NII reflects an improvement in the bank’s core interest income during the quarter.
However, SBI’s operating profit declined 1.4% to ₹26,937 crore from ₹27,311 crore in the year-ago period, despite the increase in net interest income.
Lower Provisions Support SBI’s Quarterly Profit
SBI’s provisions declined to ₹4,217 crore in Q2 FY27 from ₹5,400 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
The figure was also lower than the ₹5,047 crore reported in the June quarter, indicating a sequential decline in provisions.
The reduction in provisions supported the bank’s reported profitability during the September quarter. SBI also reported a one-time gain of ₹7,288 crore during the period.
SBI Asset Quality Improves in Q2 FY27
SBI continued to report an improvement in its asset quality during the September quarter.
The gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio declined to 1.39% from 1.47% in the preceding quarter. The net non-performing asset (NNPA) ratio also improved to 0.36% from 0.38%.

SBI Shares Trade Lower After Q2 Results
Following the earnings announcement, SBI shares were trading 0.73% lower at ₹979.75. In comparison, the benchmark Sensex was up 1.25% at around 76,641.
Despite the decline in the share price during the trading session, SBI reported double-digit growth in net profit and net interest income for Q2 FY27. Lower provisions and improving asset quality supported its performance, while the decline in operating profit and the impact of the one-time gain remain important factors in assessing the bank’s quarterly earnings.
