In a major development, senior IAS officer, Mr. Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed the new Finance Secretary of India. This appointment came after his predecessor, IAS T.V. Somanathan, was promoted to the rank of Cabinet Secretary. Mr. Pandey shall adorn the coveted office of the Finance Secretary after he completes his tenure as the Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), a crucial department under the Ministry of Finance.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved designating Pandey as the finance secretary through an order issued by the personnel ministry. A convention mentions that the senior-most secretary in the Union finance ministry is selected as the finance secretary.
The post of Finance Secretary makes its holder the administrative head of the Ministry of Finance. This post is held by a senior IAS officer of the rank of Secretary to the Government of India. Mr. Pandey is the 20th Finance Secretary of India.
IAS Tuhin Kanta Pandey’s Career:
Mr. Pandey is a 1987 batch IAS from the Odisha cadre. He holds a degree in Economics from Punjab University, Chandigarh, and also completed an MBA from a university in the UK before starting his career in civil services.
During his tenure as the Secretary of DIPAM, Office Pandey oversaw India’s key disinvestment programs, aimed at maximizing the value of central government firms. His tenure at DIPAM included the landmark sale of Air India, a national carrier that had become a significant financial burden. The successful divestment of Air India to the Tata Group in January 2022 was one of the most high-profile transactions under his leadership. Officer Pandey briefly held the additional charge as Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 2021.
Prior to his central deputation, Mr. Pandey held important positions in the state of Odisha, where he served as Principal Secretary of the Finance Department. In this role, he oversaw the state’s finances and managed its budget, contributing to significant policy reforms and financial management improvements. Officer Pandey’s commendable work in Odisha and at the national level reflects his experience and deep understanding of public finance and economic administration.
With a 37-year experience of having served in the bureaucracy, Officer Kandey is en route to taking up the most challenging role in his career.
