Shimla: Public sector hydropower major SJVN Ltd marked its 38th Raising Day today, celebrating a remarkable transformation from a single hydro project in 1988 to becoming a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) in 2024.Incorporated as a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh, the company has grown into a diversified clean energy powerhouse with operations extending across India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
CMD Bhupender Gupta Shares Visionary Message
On the occasion, SJVN’s Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Bhupender Gupta, addressed employees with a heartfelt message reflecting on the company’s journey and future ambitions. “Since the last Raising Day, SJVN has successfully commissioned 410 MW of renewable energy projects. We are advancing toward commissioning the 100 MW Nawa Solar Project in Rajasthan and the 1320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar,” he stated.

Gupta highlighted the company’s progress as a testament to the dedication and resilience of its workforce, attributing the evolution from a modest hydro initiative into a key player in India’s clean energy transition to the collective efforts of “SJVNites.”

From Himalayan Foothills to Renewable Frontlines
Rooted in the green environs of the Himalayas, SJVN has consistently prioritized sustainability and clean energy, expanding into wind, solar, and thermal domains. As of May 2025, the company operates-
- 1,972 MW of hydropower capacity from its flagship plants: Nathpa Jhakri, Rampur, and Naitwar Mori
- 97.6 MW of wind power
- 396.9 MW of solar power
Further, SJVN has ongoing hydropower projects under construction in Nepal and Bhutan, enhancing regional cooperation in renewable energy.
Marching Toward 25,000 MW by 2030, 50,000 MW by 2040
As part of its long-term vision, SJVN aims to become a 25,000 MW capacity utility by 2030 and 50,000 MW by 2040, with particular focus on solar and wind energy expansion. The company is also making significant progress toward full operational capacity of the 1,000 MW Bikaner Solar Power Project.
Navratna Status Conferred in 2024
Recognizing its rapid growth, operational efficiency, and strategic significance, SJVN was granted Navratna status by the Department of Public Enterprises on August 31, 2024, becoming the 25th CPSE to receive the prestigious designation. This upgrade follows its Miniratna status awarded in 2008.
SJVN is a publicly listed company with the following shareholding structure-
- 55.05% – Government of India
- 26.85% – Government of Himachal Pradesh
- 18.15% – Public shareholders
As of the December 2024 quarter, SJVN reported revenue of ₹670.99 crore, with a market capitalization of ₹39,450 crore. Its paid-up capital stands at ₹3,929.80 crore, and authorized capital at ₹7,000 crore.
