SLt Aastha Poonia Becomes Navy’s First Woman Fighter Pilot, Earns ‘Wings of Gold’ at INS Dega

Visakhapatnam, 3 July 2025The Indian Navy celebrated the graduation of the second Basic Hawk Conversion Course at INS Dega. Lieutenant Atul Kumar Dhull and Sub-Lieutenant Aastha Poonia received their prestigious “Wings of Gold” from Rear Admiral Janak Bevli, ACNS (Air). Significantly, SLt Aastha Poonia becomes the first woman to enter the Fighter Stream of Naval Aviation, breaking barriers and paving the way for women fighter pilots in the Navy.

Pioneering Gender Inclusivity in Naval Aviation

The Navy has previously inducted women as Pilots and Naval Air Operations Officers in maritime reconnaissance aircraft and helicopters. However, SLt Aastha Poonia’s entry into the Fighter Stream demonstrates a major commitment to gender inclusivity. This historic milestone promotes Nari Shakti and fosters a culture of equality and opportunity within Naval Aviation.

What is the Basic Hawk Conversion Course?

The Basic Hawk Conversion Course trains naval pilots to become combat-ready aviators through structured and intensive instruction. It uses the BAE Systems Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer to teach advanced flying techniques and aerial combat maneuvers. The course prepares officers for operational roles on high-speed, carrier-capable fighter aircraft used by the Indian Navy.

It bridges the gap between basic flight training and real-time deployment in complex, high-speed combat missions. Graduates of this course are ready for high-pressure environments and critical missions demanding precision, resilience, and tactical expertise.

Significance of the ‘Wings of Gold’

The ‘Wings of Gold’ symbolizes excellence, skill, and operational readiness in the elite world of Indian Naval Aviation. It is awarded only to officers who complete the rigorous training for induction into the Navy’s elite Fighter Stream. This honour reflects years of physical, mental, and tactical development in the most demanding aviation environment. For SLt Aastha Poonia, it marks a personal and institutional milestone as she becomes a trailblazer in naval combat aviation.
