The South Central Railway (SCR) officially launched the Rail Parcel App on Wednesday during the Rail Parcel Logistics conclave held at Rail Nilayam in Hyderabad. The digital platform, approved by the Railway Board as a one-year pilot initiative, marks a key step in modernising parcel logistics across the Indian Railways network.
SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava inaugurated the new application, highlighting its potential to transform traditional parcel services into a technology-driven, customer-friendly offering.
What the Rail Parcel App Offers
The Rail Parcel App functions as a digital e-marketplace for parcel services facilitated by Indian Railways. Key features include:
- End-to-end parcel booking, allowing users to book shipments from their mobile devices.
- Door-to-door pickup and delivery options eliminating the need to visit railway parcel offices physically.
- Real-time tracking of consignments throughout the transit process.
- Automated notifications at key stages of parcel movement.
- Secure digital payments via multiple online modes.
- Transparent pricing and service provider ratings, helping customers make informed choices.
Officials have noted that the app seeks to make parcel booking “as easy as booking a taxi,” reducing queues and paperwork at station counters.

Pilot Rollout: Coverage and Cities
Under the Railway Board-approved pilot, the Rail Parcel App services are initially available at 17 parcel offices across seven major cities in India. These cities include:
- Hyderabad
- Vijayawada
- Guntur
- Rajahmundry
- Visakhapatnam
- Bengaluru
- Chennai
The focus on these hubs aims to test system performance, customer uptake, and operational feasibility before considering a broader nationwide rollout.
Strategic Collaboration for Future Logistics Growth
Alongside the app launch, SCR signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore.
Under this partnership, IIM Bangalore will conduct an in-depth study of the freight logistics market, including demand forecasting, modal competitiveness analysis, industry consultations, and infrastructure assessment. The insights are expected to support long-term strategy formulation for rail-based freight growth and innovation.
Wider Vision and Potential Impact
Railway officials say the Rail Parcel initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ broader goals of digitisation and improved freight services. By combining digital efficiency with rail’s large-scale modal capacity, the app could enhance customer convenience, increase transparency, and modernise logistics operations across the country.
Depending on pilot outcomes and user feedback, the service could be expanded to other cities and regions, offering a platform where anyone in India can book and track rail parcel shipments directly from home.
