Seville/New Delhi: In a landmark boost to India’s airlift capability and aerospace self-reliance, Spain has delivered the final batch of Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The handover ceremony took place at the Airbus Defence and Space assembly line in Seville, with Indian Ambassador to Spain, Dinesh K. Patnaik, and senior IAF officials in attendance.
This delivery of 16 aircraft has completed two months ahead of schedule and it marks a major milestone in India’s largest tactical transport aircraft procurement programme and underscores the strength of Indo-Spanish defence collaboration.
Tactical Workhorse With Global Reputation
The Airbus C-295 has earned a global reputation as the most versatile and efficient tactical airlifter. Designed for rugged operational environments, the aircraft is equipped for a wide spectrum of missions including:
- Troop and cargo transport
- Maritime patrol and airborne surveillance
- Medical evacuation (MEDEVAC)
- Signals intelligence and close air support
- VIP transport and airborne firefighting
With over 300 units contracted worldwide, the C-295 boasts a strong record for operational reliability and mission readiness, making it a strategic asset for modern militaries.
India’s $2.5 Billion Commitment: A Blend of Import and Indigenous Manufacturing
India signed a landmark deal with Airbus Spain to procure 56 C-295 aircraft at a total cost of approximately USD 2.5 billion. The first 16 were built and delivered from Spain. The remaining 40 aircraft will now be manufactured domestically by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) at their state-of-the-art facility in Gujarat.
This marks the first-ever “Make in India” project in the defence aviation sector involving full-scale aircraft production. The domestic manufacturing initiative is expected to:
- Generate over 15,000 direct high-skilled jobs
- Create 10,000 indirect employment opportunities
- Integrate 125 Indian MSMEs into the global aerospace supply chain
A Turning Point in Indigenous Aerospace Capability
The transfer of the first C-295 to the Indian government was presided over by former Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on September 13, 2023, in Seville. This formal handover kicked off one of the most ambitious collaborative defence manufacturing ventures between Europe and India.
The early completion of Spain’s production phase reflects not just operational efficiency but a deepening synergy between Indian and Spanish defence industries. It also highlights India’s transition from defence buyer to defence builder on the global stage.
Strategic Fit for Indian Terrain
With its short take-off and landing (STOL) capabilities, high maneuverability, and all-weather operability, the C-295 is especially suited for India’s challenging geographies—from Himalayan altitudes to island territories. Its ability to perform multi-role tasks ensures that the IAF is equipped with a reliable tactical platform to support diverse missions.
Defence Diplomacy in Action
Beyond aircraft acquisition, this deal underscores the growing strategic trust between India and Spain. The successful execution of the C-295 programme has opened new avenues for joint production, supply chain integration, and co-development in future aerospace technologies.
