Mumbai: In a significant leadership transition within the Indian Navy, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, AVSM, VSM assumed command as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Western Naval Command on July 31, 2025. He succeeds Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh, PVSM, AVSM, NM, who superannuated after serving the nation with distinction for four decades.
On taking charge, Vice Admiral Swaminathan paid solemn tribute to fallen naval personnel at the Gaurav Stambh in the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai—honouring the legacy of those who laid down their lives in service of the nation.
Seasoned Leadership with Deep Operational Roots
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1987, Vice Admiral Swaminathan is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare. He is a distinguished alumnus of multiple premier military institutions, including the National Defence Academy, Joint Services Command and Staff College (UK), College of Naval Warfare (Karanja), and the US Naval War College, Newport.
His illustrious naval career spans critical command appointments, including leadership of missile vessels Vidyut and Vinash, missile corvette Kulish, guided missile destroyer Mysore, and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
Pivotal Roles Across Command and Training Domains
As Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Southern Naval Command, Kochi—steering naval training policy across the force. He also raised the Indian Naval Safety Team, reinforcing operational safety protocols across all verticals of the Navy.
His subsequent appointment as Flag Officer Sea Training placed him at the helm of the Navy’s work-up organisation, after which he commanded the Western Fleet as the Flag Officer Commanding—a position synonymous with combat leadership of the Navy’s Sword Arm.
He later assumed key responsibilities as Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Advisor, Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India ensuring maritime safety in critical offshore zones.
Strategic Planning and Personnel Management at Senior Ranks

Elevated to the rank of Vice Admiral, he held senior strategic posts including Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command in Mumbai, Controller of Personnel Services, and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters, New Delhi. His immediate past assignment was as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, the second-highest position in the Navy, overseeing vital organisational and operational frameworks.
Academic Excellence Anchoring Strategic Insight
Vice Admiral Swaminathan’s academic achievements reflect his commitment to intellectual and operational synergy. He holds a BSc from Jawaharlal Nehru University, MSc in Telecommunications from Cochin University of Science and Technology, MA in Defence Studies from King’s College London, MPhil in Strategic Studies from Mumbai University, and a PhD in International Studies from the same institution.
His comprehensive educational and operational background positions him to lead Western Naval Command through evolving maritime challenges in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond.
