Patna: A major infrastructure project in Bihar is set to transform regional connectivity and economic activity with the construction of the four-lane Sultanganj–Agwani Ghat Bridge over the Ganga River.
Once completed, the bridge will provide a direct link between North and South Bihar, while also strengthening trade routes with neighboring states and improving access to international markets in Nepal.
Officials say the project will significantly boost transportation, agricultural trade, and pilgrimage travel across the region.
Mega Bridge Project to Be Completed by 2027
According to officials, the four-lane bridge connecting Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district and Agwani Ghat in Khagariadistrict is expected to be completed by November 2027.
The bridge will span approximately 3.16 kilometres across the Ganga River and will be built as a four-lane highway bridge, significantly improving cross-river connectivity.
The project is being executed by the Bihar Bridge Construction Corporation at an estimated cost of ₹1,710 crore.
Approach Roads to Improve Regional Connectivity
Along with the bridge, a 20-kilometre-long approach road is being developed to ensure smooth access from both sides of the river.
• Around 4 km of the approach road will be built towards Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district.
• Approximately 16 km will extend towards Agwani Ghat in Khagaria district.
These road connections will integrate the bridge into the regional highway network, making travel faster and more efficient.
Strengthening Connectivity Across States and Borders
Officials from the Bihar Bridge Construction Corporation say the Sultanganj–Agwani Ghat bridge will significantly strengthen regional and interstate connectivity.
The new corridor will improve links between:
• Bihar
• Jharkhand
• West Bengal
In addition, the bridge will help establish easier access to Nepal, facilitating international trade and travel.
By reducing travel distance and time across the Ganga, the project is expected to open new economic opportunities for businesses and industries across eastern India.
Major Convenience for Baijnath Dham Pilgrims
The bridge will also benefit millions of devotees who undertake pilgrimage journeys to Baijnath Dham.
Every year during the holy month of Shravan and on other occasions, devotees collect sacred Ganga water from Sultanganj and carry it to Baijnath Dham for religious rituals.
Currently, travel between the two sides of the river can be time-consuming and inconvenient. The construction of the four-lane bridge will significantly reduce travel time and improve safety and convenience for pilgrims.
Boost for Agriculture and Rural Economy
The new bridge is expected to provide major economic benefits to farmers in districts such as Bhagalpur and Khagaria.
Farmers in these regions cultivate large quantities of crops including:
• Sugarcane
• Potatoes
• Maize
• Bananas
• Mangoes
• Rice
• Wheat
• Pulses
Improved connectivity will allow farmers to transport their produce more efficiently to markets in neighboring states and even to international markets in Nepal.
This enhanced connectivity could help farmers secure better prices for their produce and expand their trading opportunities.
Railway Over Bridge Planned on NH-31
To support the bridge project and ensure smooth traffic flow, a Railway Over Bridge (ROB) is also being constructed near Pasraha on National Highway 31.
The infrastructure around Pasraha will also include:
• A traffic rotary
• A grade separator
These additional road structures are designed to improve traffic movement and reduce congestion in key regional centres including:
• Khagaria
• Bhagalpur
• Purnia
Reducing Traffic Congestion and Travel Time
The combination of the new Ganga bridge, approach roads, and the railway overbridge is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion across the region.
Residents and travelers will benefit from:
• Faster transportation routes
• Safer road infrastructure
• Improved connectivity between districts and states
The project will also enhance logistics efficiency for businesses and agricultural producers.
A New Era of Connectivity for Bihar
The Sultanganj–Agwani Ghat bridge represents one of the major infrastructure initiatives aimed at transforming Bihar’s connectivity landscape.
Once completed in 2027, the bridge is expected to serve as a critical transportation corridor linking North and South Bihar while strengthening interstate and international trade routes.
By improving access to markets, facilitating pilgrimage travel, and enhancing transportation networks, the project is poised to play a key role in driving economic growth and regional development across Bihar and neighboring regions.
