In a first for the country, Tamil Nadu has introduced the Smart Performance Appraisal Report Recording Online Window (SPARROW) to digitize the Annual Performance Appraisal Report (APAR) of approximately 13,000 non-IPS police officers, from sub-inspectors (SIs) to superintendents of police (SPs).
The SPARROW portal, previously used exclusively for IAS, IPS, and other senior bureaucrats across India, will now streamline the performance assessment of non-IPS officers, as confirmed in a statement from the Director General of Police (DGP) office. The online appraisal system replaces the manual process, where officers had to personally meet with senior officials to have their Annual Confidential Report (ACR) reviewed.
The APAR is crucial for police officers’ career advancement, influencing decisions on promotions, transfers, postings, and nominations for medals and awards. By moving the process online, the Tamil Nadu police department aims to enhance transparency and efficiency, reducing the time and effort officers spend in securing their evaluations.
