Bengaluru: In a significant development for India’s defence and aerospace ambitions, Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, visited Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bengaluru on Tuesday to review the progress of several key indigenous programmes.
The visit highlights the government’s sharp focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing and India’s expanding footprint in the space sector.
HAL Leadership Briefs Dr. Mishra on Flagship Projects
1972 batch IAS officer Dr Mishra was received by Dr. D.K. Sunil, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, along with members of the HAL Board. The visit began at the Aircraft Research & Design Centre (ARDC), where he inspected the LCA Mk 2 hangar. A comprehensive review followed at the LCA Tejas Assembly Hangar, showcasing HAL’s production and design capabilities.
At the LCA Division, HAL presented six LCA Tejas Mk 1A fighter aircraft and two Mk 1 trainer aircraft currently under production. These platforms represent the growing maturity and operational readiness of India’s indigenous light combat aircraft programme.
HAL Showcases Next-Gen Helicopters and Trainers
In a demonstration of its diverse indigenous portfolio, HAL also displayed-
- Prachand (Light Combat Helicopter – LCH)
- Light Utility Helicopter (LUH)
- Dhruv (Advanced Light Helicopter – ALH)
- Hindustan Turbo Trainer (HTT-40)
These platforms signify HAL’s expanding production spectrum and its commitment to future multi-stakeholder defence programmes that align with the national vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
ISRO Chairman Joins HAL Space Infrastructure Review
Dr. Mishra was accompanied by Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), during his tour of HAL’s Aerospace Division. The visit included critical inspections of the:
- GSLV Mk III and PSLV assembly shops
- Advanced welding and integration facilities
- Components for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission
- Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility
HAL’s pivotal role in ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission and other space programmes was underscored, especially with the company’s recent selection for Transfer of Technology (ToT) for the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) — a milestone reflecting HAL’s growing influence in India’s space industry.
Strategic Importance of HAL Recognised
Dr. Mishra appreciated HAL’s continued efforts in building strategic capabilities, driving indigenisation, and supporting India’s goals in defence and space. He commended the organisation’s “critical contribution to national self-reliance,” highlighting HAL as a central pillar in the ecosystem of innovation and high-tech manufacturing.
