New Delhi: Troop Comforts Limited (TCL), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), has signed a major Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global sportswear leader Adidas aimed at developing advanced physical training (PT) footwear tailored to the rigorous needs of the Indian Armed Forces.
This partnership represents a pivotal step in strengthening Make in India defence innovation while improving the operational readiness and comfort of soldiers across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Importance of Troop Comforts Ltd–Adidas MoU
Troop Comforts Ltd — carved out from the erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board in 2021 — is tasked with producing specialised military clothing and gear for Indian defence forces. Adidas is globally respected for its cutting-edge sports technology, athletic engineering, and performance footwear.
Together, they aim to blend global technology strengths with indigenous defence manufacturing capability to create PT footwear that meets the exacting standards of modern military training and deployment.
Key Goals of the Troop Comforts Ltd–Adidas MoU
- Designing high-performance PT shoes with advanced cushioning, stability, and support suited for varied Indian terrains.
- Upgrading durability and comfort compared to conventional PT footwear widely used in current training regimens.
- Conducting joint research, product prototyping, and field testing with select units across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Focus on Soldier Performance & Safety
Military PT routines are physically demanding, often involving long marches, obstacle courses, and high-impact drills. Standard issue footwear — often canvas or basic rubber-soled shoes — has long been criticised for limitations in support, traction, and comfort.
The new Adidas-TCL PT footwear range promises:
- Enhanced cushioning systems that reduce stress on joints.
- Breathable upper materials that keep feet dry under intense activity.
- Anti-slip soles engineered for Indian soil types from snowy Himalayan posts to desert flats.
- Lightweight designs to reduce fatigue during prolonged exercises.
These performance attributes are expected to significantly improve soldier endurance, reduce injury risk, and enhance overall combat readiness.
Supporting India’s Indigenous Defence Drive
The collaboration aligns with India’s broader agenda to build a self-reliant defence industrial base. By facilitating technology transfer from Adidas and integrating it with domestic manufacturing infrastructure, the partnership supports the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative.
Under the agreement:
- Prototyping and initial testing will occur at TCL’s four manufacturing units across India.
- Field trials with defence personnel are planned to ensure operational suitability.
- Successful outcomes could pave the way for large-scale production contracts worth hundreds of crores of rupees.
Impact of Troop Comforts Ltd–Adidas MoU
Industry analysts view this MoU as a milestone in public-private defence partnerships. It not only strengthens indigenous defence product development but also has potential economic benefits:
- Job creation in manufacturing, R&D, and logistics.
- Boost for Indian supply chains integrated into the footwear ecosystem.
- Export opportunities for advanced PT and military training footwear in global defence markets.
For Adidas, this partnership expands its footprint into India’s rapidly growing defence sector — estimated to be worth over ₹6 lakh crore annually — under stringent quality and sustainability norms.
