Union Minister Mr. G Kishan Reddy, who holds the Coal and Mines portfolio, emphasized the critical role of the coal sector in advancing India’s energy security and economic growth. Speaking at a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Coal, the minister highlighted coal’s indispensable contribution to India’s development objectives and sustainability efforts.
Mr. Reddy informed the committee members about the sustainable development initiatives undertaken by coal and lignite Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). These efforts ensure that coal production aligns with environmental conservation, societal well-being, and biodiversity protection.
The minister stressed that environmental protection during mining activities remains a core focus for coal and lignite PSUs. He assured that these PSUs not only adhere to statutory environmental laws but also exceed compliance requirements to enhance environmental standards in and around mining areas.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to sustainable development, Mr. Reddy underscored India’s target of achieving net zero emissions by 2070. He assured the committee of the coal sector’s alignment with this long-term vision while continuing to meet the country’s energy needs responsibly.
