The Yogi Adityanath Government in Uttar Pradesh has introduced a significant change in the process for appointing the Director General of Police (DGP), setting a model that could inspire similar policies in non-BJP governed states. Under newly approved Appointment Rules, 2024, the state cabinet has greenlit a transparent selection framework managed by a dedicated committee rather than relying on the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for nominations.
This committee, chaired by a retired high court judge, will include the Chief Secretary, a representative from UPSC, the Chairman or a nominee from the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission, the Additional Chief Secretary or Principal Secretary from the Home Department, and a former DGP from the state.
Eligibility requirements specify that candidates must have at least six months of service remaining when the position becomes vacant and should be serving at Level 16 of the Pay Matrix in a Director General role.
