Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a landmark decision to extend significant healthcare benefits to employees associated with the education sector. In a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday, approval was granted to provide cashless medical treatment to teachers, non-teaching staff, and their dependent family members working under the Secondary and Basic Education Departments. This facility will be available not only in government hospitals but also in private hospitals across the state.
Teachers’ Day Announcement Now Formally Approved
The initiative, initially announced by CM Yogi on Teachers’ Day 2025, has now received formal cabinet approval. Approximately 15 lakh teachers and non-teaching employees under the Basic and Secondary Education Departments are expected to benefit from this scheme. The total estimated financial outlay for the program is around ₹448 crore.
Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna informed the media that 32 proposals were presented to the cabinet during the meeting, of which 30 were approved, highlighting the government’s focus on welfare-oriented initiatives.
Who Will Benefit?
Secondary Education Department: Teachers working in aided institutions, including vocational education subject experts and honorary teachers, teachers of aided institutions recognized by the Sanskrit Education Council, teachers of self-financed institutions recognized by the Secondary Education Council and the Sanskrit Education Council, and vocational education subject experts working on honorarium in government and aided schools.
Dependents of all eligible employees will also be covered.
Secondary Education Minister Gulab Devi stated that over 2.97 lakh beneficiaries would come under this category, with an estimated expenditure of ₹89.25 crore.
Basic Education Department: Teachers, Shiksha Mitras, special educators, instructors working in aided and self-financed schools under the Basic Education Council, wardens and full-time/part-time teachers of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, and cooks engaged under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Yojana, along with their dependents, will also be eligible.
Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh reported that more than 11.95 lakh teachers and staff under this category would benefit, with an annual financial allocation of ₹358.61 crore. The average annual premium per employee is estimated at ₹3,000.
How the Scheme Will Work
The cashless treatment will be provided in both government and private hospitals through SACHIS, with treatment rates aligned to the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and norms prescribed by the National Health Authority. Teachers working in self-financed, recognized institutions will receive benefits after verification by district-level committees headed by the District Inspector of Schools and Basic Education Officer.
Eligibility Clarifications
The government clarified that employees and dependents already covered under any other central or state government health scheme, including the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Abhiyan, will not be eligible for this new scheme.
This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening the welfare framework for teachers and staff in Uttar Pradesh, ensuring they receive timely and comprehensive medical support while recognizing their contribution to the state’s education sector.
