New Delhi: Agasthya-1 rocket is emerging as a major breakthrough in India’s private space sector, offering a fast and reliable way to launch satellites. Developed by Surat-based startup Bharath Space Vehicle (BSV), this liquid-fuel rocket is designed to be ready for launch within just 24 hours. This capability could change how India responds to urgent needs like defence surveillance and disaster monitoring.

Built by former ISRO scientists, Agasthya-1 combines experience with innovation and aims to strengthen India’s position in the global space market.

What is the Agasthya-1 Rocket?

Agasthya-1 is a two-stage, liquid-fuel rocket designed mainly for launching small satellites into orbit.

  • Height: Around 28 metres
  • Payload:
    • 500 kg to Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO)
    • 800 kg to Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
  • Orbit altitude: Around 400 km

This makes it suitable for modern satellite applications like communication, earth observation, and defence monitoring.

Why Agasthya-1 Rocket is Different from Other Indian Rockets

1. Liquid Fuel Advantage

Unlike many Indian rockets that use solid fuel, Agasthya-1 uses:

  • Liquid Oxygen (LOX)
  • Kerosene (RP-1)

This allows engineers to test the engine before launch, which is not possible with solid-fuel rockets.

2. “Test What You Fly” Approach

  • Engines can be tested on ground before launch
  • Second stage can run for up to 40 seconds during testing
  • Critical systems like stage separation can also be checked

This reduces the risk of failure during actual flight.

Biggest Highlight: 24-Hour Launch Readiness

One of the most important features of the Agasthya-1 rocket is its ability to be ready for launch within 24 hours.

This is useful for:

  • Defence surveillance missions
  • Disaster response (floods, earthquakes)
  • Urgent satellite deployment

Traditional rockets often take weeks or months to prepare, but Agasthya-1 aims to reduce this time drastically.

Who is Behind Agasthya-1?

The project is led by Bharath Space Vehicle (BSV), a startup founded in 2024.

Key Experts:

  • Dr. N. Vedachalam
    • Former Director, ISRO Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre
    • Played a major role in cryogenic engine development
  • S. V. Sharma
    • Worked on SLV, PSLV, GSLV programs
    • Collaborated with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

The team has 70+ years of combined ISRO experience, making it a highly credible project.

Gujarat May Become India’s New Space Hub

BSV is planning to build a launch site near Kodinar in Gujarat.

If approved:

  • It could become India’s first west-coast spaceport
  • Reduce dependency on Sriharikota
  • Boost regional industrial growth

This aligns with India’s New Space Policy 2023, which encourages private participation.

What is the Importance of Agasthya-1 Rocket

Agasthya-1 could play a big role in:

1. Defence Strength

Quick satellite launches for border monitoring and intelligence.

2. Disaster Management

Faster deployment of satellites during emergencies.

3. Commercial Space Growth

Affordable launches for startups and global clients.

4. Global Competition

Helps India compete with companies like Rocket Lab and SpaceX.

Challenges Ahead

Despite strong potential, the project faces challenges:

  • Technical testing and validation
  • Regulatory approvals
  • Infrastructure development
  • Competition from global players
