LUCKNOW: In a significant step towards strengthening defence manufacturing in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday handed over the land allotment letter for 75 hectares at the Chitrakoot Defence Industrial Corridor to Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The initiative marks a major institutional move in the planned and phased development of the Chitrakoot defence node.
Officials said the project aims to boost industrial expansion in the Bundelkhand region, while positioning Uttar Pradesh as a key player in India’s defence production sector.
BEL to Invest ₹562.5 Crore in Advanced Defence Manufacturing
Under the project, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will invest approximately ₹562.5 crore to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing unit for advanced radar and air defence systems.
The facility will enhance the high-tech defence production capabilities of the state, strengthen local technological infrastructure, and promote research, innovation, and skill development in defence manufacturing.
Employment Opportunities for Local Youth
The Chitrakoot defence node is expected to create over 300 direct employment opportunities, while generating substantial indirect jobs in auxiliary industries and the MSME sector. Officials highlighted that the project will provide local youth with job opportunities in their own region, reducing migration and contributing to regional economic stability.
Economic and Industrial Growth in Bundelkhand
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized that Chitrakoot, traditionally known for its cultural and spiritual significance, is now emerging as a hub for defence manufacturing and industrial development.
He stated that the project will strengthen the regional economy, encourage research and innovation, and foster the creation of a modern industrial ecosystem in Bundelkhand. The CM also linked the initiative to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) mission, noting that such projects will reduce import dependence and promote domestic defence manufacturing.
Strategic Importance for Uttar Pradesh
Officials noted that the Chitrakoot Defence Industrial Corridor will:
- Enhance Uttar Pradesh’s defence production capabilities
- Promote technological advancement and high-tech manufacturing
- Stimulate industrial growth in Bundelkhand
- Support employment generation and skill development
- Contribute to India’s self-reliance in defence
The project represents a major milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to develop modern industrial infrastructure and attract strategic investments.
Looking Ahead
With the land allotment for BEL completed, the development of the Chitrakoot Defence Industrial Corridor is expected to progress rapidly. Authorities aim to ensure timely implementation, high-quality construction standards, and strong integration with local industries and MSMEs, making Uttar Pradesh a prominent hub for defence innovation and manufacturing in India.
