Lucknow: In a major step towards water security and sustainable development, the Uttar Pradesh government under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has set an ambitious target to ensure 100 per cent safe reuse of wastewater by the year 2035. As part of this long-term vision, 50 per cent reuse of treated wastewater will be achieved by 2030, marking a transformative shift in the state’s water management strategy.
Wastewater to Become a Resource, Not a Burden
Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision, wastewater will no longer be treated as a liability but as a valuable economic resource. The state government is in the process of formulating a comprehensive policy under which treated water will be reused for municipal services, industrial purposes, agriculture, and other non-potable domestic uses. This approach is expected to significantly reduce pressure on groundwater resources while strengthening environmental balance.
Clear Roadmap for Wastewater Management
The Uttar Pradesh State Swachh Ganga Mission has prepared a detailed roadmap for wastewater management across the state. Project Director Joginder Singh stated that under CM Yogi’s leadership, unprecedented work has been carried out in the direction of river conservation and water rejuvenation. Building on this foundation, the government is now focusing on systematic reuse of treated wastewater to support long-term sustainability goals.
Three-Phase Implementation Plan
The wastewater reuse plan will be implemented in three structured phases.
- First Phase (2025–2030):
In areas where sewage treatment plants (STPs) and collection infrastructure already exist, the government aims to achieve 50 per cent reuse of wastewater. - Second Phase (2030–2035):
Capacity expansion in these areas will be undertaken to ensure 100 per cent reuse of wastewater. - Third Phase (up to 2045):
In regions where treatment and collection systems are currently unavailable, infrastructure will be developed in a phased manner—first enabling 30 per cent reuse, then 50 per cent, and ultimately achieving 100 per cent wastewater reuse.
Separate Planning for Urban, Rural and Non-Potable Use
On the directions of CM Yogi Adityanath, separate and customized plans are being prepared for urban areas, rural regions, and non-potable water usage. The initiative aims to balance water conservation with economic growth by supporting industries and agriculture while conserving freshwater for drinking purposes.
Uttar Pradesh Set to Become a National Role Model
According to officials of the State Swachh Ganga Mission, Uttar Pradesh is steadily emerging as a national model in water conservation and water management. By converting wastewater into a developmental resource, the state is aligning environmental protection with economic progress. Under CM Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, Uttar Pradesh is poised to become a benchmark for sustainable water management practices across the country.
