Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Tuesday emphasized the critical need for policy reforms and simplified administrative processes to strengthen India’s research and development (R&D) framework. She was speaking at a high-level consultative meeting organized by NITI Aayog on “Ease of Doing Research and Development.”
The two-day event brought together leading scientists, academicians, and research professionals to deliberate on improving India’s R&D landscape in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Developed India.”
Innovation is the Way Forward
“Innovation is the key to national progress,” said Governor Patel, urging for comprehensive policy reforms, flexible regulations, and the removal of bureaucratic hurdles that hinder the growth of science and research.
She stressed that excessive administrative burdens on researchers were detrimental to scientific advancement and called for urgent intervention.
Strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s Academic Institutions
Highlighting Uttar Pradesh’s academic momentum, Patel revealed that 14 universities from the state have been selected by the UGC for multidisciplinary education and research. She also applauded their improving performance in the QS Asia Rankings, which she said reflected their readiness for global academic competition.
Key Suggestions for Advancing Research
Governor Patel made several important recommendations:
- Timely disbursement of research grants to avoid disruptions in scientific work.
- Direct funding to universities focused on research.
- Integration of research into academic curricula with a focus on local relevance.
- Improved implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) for holistic growth.
- Strengthening early childhood education by linking universities with Anganwadi centres.
“Education is not an ordinary experiment – it is a nation-building effort that requires full dedication,” she said.
Focus on Practical and Impactful Research
Patel urged universities to select research topics with practical value that address real-world issues and contribute to public welfare. She emphasized that group-based, collaborative research initiatives are essential for better outcomes and aligning efforts with national goals.
MoUs with Global Institutions
The Governor noted that state universities in Uttar Pradesh have signed MoUs with several prominent foreign institutions, which have already begun yielding positive results. She stressed the importance of effective administrative systems to ensure the timely delivery of welfare schemes to beneficiaries.
Collaboration is Key to a Developed India
Calling for coordination across all levels of academia and administration, Patel concluded that a collective, planned approach is the best way to realize the Prime Minister’s vision of a “Developed India.” She also lauded agricultural universities for their region-specific innovations and encouraged the sharing of best practices to elevate India’s research ecosystem.
