Lucknow: The 1994 batch senior IAS officer Amit Kumar Ghosh has been appointed as the Principal Secretary of Secretariat Administration, with the official notification issued on Thursday.

This marks a significant move in Ghosh’s illustrious career, further establishing his role in key administrative positions within Uttar Pradesh.

From Delhi to Uttar Pradesh: A New Chapter for Amit Kumar Ghosh

Mr Ghosh had previously been serving as the Additional Secretary in the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment in the Government of India. In a recent decision, the Government of India decided to return him to his original Uttar Pradesh cadre, where he has previously held important administrative roles, including his tenure as the District Magistrate (DM) of Lucknow during the Mayawati government.

A Veteran Administrator

Mr Ghosh has held several prominent positions during his decades-long career. Notably, he served as the District Magistrate of Lucknow during the Mayawati-led government, a role that gave him crucial insights into urban governance and law-and-order management.

He has also been the Managing Director of the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC), where his leadership was both impactful and, at times, surrounded by administrative controversies. Despite this, Ghosh has been widely acknowledged for his efficiency and strong grasp of governance challenges, especially in complex and high-pressure environments.

Expertise in Social Justice and State Development

His recent stint at the Centre, in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has further enhanced his policy-level experience, particularly in areas concerning welfare, inclusion, and rights-based development. According to government sources, his return to Uttar Pradesh is aimed at leveraging this experience to strengthen state-level program implementation and administrative efficiency in key departments.

Ghosh’s repatriation is expected to bolster the state machinery, especially in sectors such as social justice, empowerment, industrial development, and urban administration, where his insights could prove valuable.

The state government is likely to assign him a strategic portfolio, considering both his seniority and his proven track record in policy execution and governance innovation.

An Important Role for State Governance

As Principal Secretary of Secretariat Administration, Amit Kumar Ghosh will be tasked with overseeing the functioning of the state secretariat, playing a crucial role in the governance and administration of Uttar Pradesh. His experience and expertise in administrative roles are expected to contribute significantly to the state’s development agenda.
