The Uttar Pradesh Police is set to witness a major administrative reshuffle after the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) cleared the promotion of ten Indian Police Service (IPS) officers of the 2012 batch to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). The decision was taken during a recent high-level meeting, and official promotion orders are expected to be issued soon.
Once the government releases the formal notification, several districts currently headed by these officers are likely to see leadership changes, especially at the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) level.
Key district police chiefs among promotees
The promotion list includes officers currently leading some of Uttar Pradesh’s most sensitive and strategically important districts. Gorakhpur SSP Raj Karan Nayyar and Meerut SSP Vipin Tada are among the prominent names cleared for elevation. Their promotion is expected to trigger the appointment of new police captains in these districts, increasing administrative activity within the state police setup.

Promotion based on performance and service record
According to official sources, the promotions were granted after a detailed review of the officers’ length of service, discipline, leadership abilities, and overall law-and-order performance. Officers posted at the police headquarters, including Hemraj Meena and Santosh Kumar Mishra, were also found eligible based on their administrative experience.
Likely changes after DIG promotion
After assuming the DIG rank, these officers are expected to be assigned as Range DIGs or given important responsibilities at the police headquarters, in line with service norms. With SSPs from major districts such as Gorakhpur, Meerut, and Saharanpur moving up, speculation has intensified regarding new SSP postings in these regions.
Boost for UP Police ahead of the new year
The promotion of these experienced officers ahead of the new year is expected to strengthen the command structure of the Uttar Pradesh Police. The move is being viewed as a step toward improved supervision, strategic planning, and more effective law-and-order management across the state.
