Lucknow – The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has formally requested a one-year extension for Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, a 1988-batch IAS officer ahead of his scheduled retirement on July 31, 2025. The proposal, seeking approval from the Centre, reflects Singh’s central role in steering high-impact initiatives across infrastructure, investment, and economic targets.

Veteran Bureaucrat’s Contributions Power Extension Recommendation

Manoj Kumar Singh has held the top bureaucratic post since June 30, 2024, succeeding Durga Shankar Mishra, a 1984 batch retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. The state’s formal letter to the Centre highlights his instrumental work in organising the Global Investors Summit, overseeing the recent Ground Breaking Ceremony, and contributing to Uttar Pradesh’s ambitious goal of achieving a $1 trillion economy.

Meanwhile, he continues to manage additional administrative duties as Infrastructure & Industrial Development Commissioner (IIDC), Chairman of PICUP, and head of several other state authorities—underscoring the government’s reliance on his experience and leadership.

Centre’s Decision Will Shape Bureaucratic Succession

At present, the matter is pending with the central government. If the extension isn’t granted, names under consideration to succeed him include senior 1989-batch IAS officers such as S.P. Goyal (Additional Chief Secretary to the CM) and Devesh Chaturvedi (Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare). Their potential elevation would mark a strategic administrative transition in one of India’s most significant states.

Key Takeaway

Manoj Kumar Singh’s extension bid reflects Uttar Pradesh’s administrative imperative to maintain experienced leadership during a critical phase of economic and infrastructural growth. The Centre’s decision will determine whether continuity or succession defines the next chapter in the state’s bureaucratic hierarchy.
