Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has achieved a historic milestone in agriculture. The agriculture growth rate has surged from 8.6% in 2016-17 to 17.7% in 2024-25, signaling a major turnaround in the state’s farming sector. With over 187.70 lakh hectares of cultivable land spread across nine climatic zones, UP now cultivates 76% of its available land, leading the nation in farming activity.
Officials attribute this remarkable growth to the effective implementation of government schemes, advanced irrigation facilities, modern farming methods, and direct financial aid to farmers.
Major Factors Behind the Growth
1. Direct Farmer Assistance
Schemes like PM Kisan and Kisan Kalyan Mission have ensured that economic support reaches farmers directly, empowering them to invest in better crop production.
2. Higher Minimum Support Prices (MSP)
The state has raised MSP for crops like rice, sugarcane, and pulses, helping farmers secure better returns and motivating higher output.
3. Focus on Modern and Natural Farming
Promotion of organic and natural farming methods has increased yield and protected the environment, while also opening avenues for premium organic markets.
4. Enhanced Crop Production
Wheat, rice, pulses, and oilseeds have seen notable growth, increasing farmer incomes and strengthening food security.
5. Robust Agricultural Infrastructure
Improvements in land management, irrigation, and biofertilizer production facilities have supported sustainable agriculture and consistent growth.
Uttar Pradesh’s Dominance in Key Agricultural Outputs
Ethanol Production:
UP contributes 42.27% of India’s ethanol, producing 180 crore liters in 2023-24, with a projected capacity of 223.9 crore liters for 2024-25. Ethanol comes primarily from sugarcane and maize, boosting farmer earnings while reducing pollution.
Oilseed Production:
UP contributes 6.9% of India’s oilseed output, including mustard, sesame, groundnut, and soybean. Support through seed mini kits and MSP aims to achieve oilseed self-reliance by 2026-27.
Pulses Production:
UP produces over 3.25 million tons of pulses, accounting for 14.1% of India’s total. Government schemes are actively supporting expansion in pulse cultivation.
Rice Production:
UP ranks second in India for rice production, cultivating more than 5.86 lakh hectares, contributing 14.7% to the national rice output.
Wheat Production:
UP continues as India’s top wheat-producing state, with 414.39 lakh metric tons produced in 2024-25, accounting for over 35% of the national output.
Milk Production:
UP leads the nation in milk production, contributing 16.21% of India’s total, with total production at 239.3 lakh liters in 2023-24. Per capita milk availability rose to 471 ml in 2024.
Sugarcane Production:
UP dominates sugarcane cultivation with 29.51 lakh hectares, producing 54.5% of India’s output. Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Meerut lead production, while Lakhimpur Kheri is famously known as the “Sugar Bowl” of India.
Government Policies Driving Agricultural Success
The Uttar Pradesh government’s multi-pronged approach has strengthened agriculture by:
- Boosting farmer income through direct support and MSPs
- Promoting modern and organic farming techniques
- Expanding crop production across staple and cash crops
- Developing irrigation, land, and agro-infrastructure
These policies have not only increased output but also made UP a model for agricultural growth in India, providing prosperity to farmers and contributing to the state’s economy.
