Lucknow: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a transformative shift in agriculture with the promotion of cow-based natural farming. This initiative not only strengthens cow protection but also reduces farmers’ costs, improves crop quality, and increases income, while supporting sustainable environmental practices.
Cow Protection Strengthened Across the State
Shyam Bihari Gupta, Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Cow Service Commission, highlighted that prior to 2017, cow smuggling was a significant issue in the state. Since the Yogi government took office, strict actions have been taken against illegal slaughterhouses, leading to their closure. Today, approximately 7,500 gaushalas (cow shelters) protect nearly 12.58 lakh cattle across Uttar Pradesh, marking a substantial improvement in cow conservation efforts.

Cow-Based Natural Farming Mission Launched
In line with the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the government has launched the “Cow-Based Natural Farming Mission” to make gaushalas self-reliant and enhance farmers’ income. The initiative focuses on promoting natural farming practices on a large scale, providing farmers with sustainable and cost-effective agricultural solutions.
Expansion of Natural Farming Across 94,000 Hectares
Currently, cow-based natural farming covers around 94,000 hectares across Uttar Pradesh. In the Bundelkhand region—including Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, and Mahoba districts—nearly 23,500 hectares are actively under this mission. Farmers are seeing direct benefits from reduced costs and improved productivity.
Organic Products from Cow Urine and Dung
One cow can provide approximately 5 liters of cow urine and 10 kilograms of cow dung per day, both of which are crucial for natural farming. With nearly 1.9 crore cattle in the state, there is immense potential for producing organic fertilizers and bio-products that enhance soil fertility and crop quality.
Reduced Farming Costs and Better Crop Quality
By using cow-based organic products, farmers are able to lower their cultivation costs significantly. At the same time, the quality of crops has improved, leading to higher yields and increased income. This approach also helps maintain soil fertility, ensuring long-term sustainability in agriculture.
Gaushalas Evolving into Organic Farming Centers
Uttar Pradesh now has 7,716 locations engaged in cow protection. These gaushalas are no longer limited to sheltering cattle—they are also becoming centers for producing organic fertilizers and bio-products, providing farmers with ready-to-use natural farming inputs.
Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Farming
Cow-based natural farming is not just boosting farmers’ income; it is also contributing to environmental protection. This model promotes sustainable agriculture, reduces dependency on chemical fertilizers, and fosters eco-friendly farming practices. Experts suggest that this approach could shape the future of agriculture in Uttar Pradesh.
