Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday said that over the past eight decades, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made remarkable contributions in ensuring quality, reliability, and consumer protection across the country, truly realizing the mantra that “quality is identity.”
The Chief Minister was speaking at a function organized at his official residence in Dehradun on the occasion of the 79th Foundation Day of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
BIS Strengthening India’s Industrial and Economic Growth
Highlighting the historical journey of the institution, CM Dhami said that BIS began its journey in 1947 as the Bhartiya Manak Sanstha (Indian Standards Institution) and has since evolved into a strong foundation supporting India’s industrial, scientific, and economic progress.
He said that through its work in standardization, certification, and quality testing, BIS has enabled Indian industries to compete at the global level while simultaneously strengthening consumer trust and safety in everyday life.

Expanding Role of Standardization
The Chief Minister noted that the role of standardization has expanded far beyond traditional industries. Today, BIS standards are contributing significantly to sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, road safety, energy, water conservation, disaster management, and digital services.
He emphasized that BIS is playing a crucial role in shaping the future by setting timely standards in emerging areas including digital security, medical devices, drones, electric vehicles, recycled materials, and green energy.
Focus on Sustainable Development and State-Level Collaboration
CM Dhami said that BIS is making commendable efforts to maintain a balance between ecology and economy, aligning with the broader goal of sustainable development. In Uttarakhand, BIS is actively coordinating with departments such as the Public Works Department, Disaster Management Department, Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), and Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) to promote awareness and collaborative efforts related to standardization.
Promoting Quality Standards for Local Products
The Chief Minister also highlighted the State Government’s initiatives to establish high-quality standards for local handicrafts, organic agricultural products, medicinal herbs, and traditional food items. He said that the “House of Himalayas” brand has been launched to provide global recognition to Uttarakhand’s traditional and indigenous products, ensuring quality assurance and better market access.
