In a swift and compassionate response to the recent cloudburst in the Nandanagar area of Chamoli district, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an on-site inspection of the affected region on Saturday. Landing at the Kurud Helipad, Mr. Dhami met with affected families, listened to their concerns, and assured them of full government support during this crisis.
During his interaction, Mr. Dhami emphasized that the state government stands firmly with the disaster-hit residents, reiterating the administration’s commitment to fast-tracking relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts.
Rescue and Relief Operations in Full Swing
The disaster, which struck on Wednesday night due to a severe cloudburst, resulted in significant destruction. According to official reports:
- Seven lives were lost, and eleven individuals sustained injuries, all of whom have received medical treatment at local hospitals.
- Two people remain missing as intensive rescue operations continue for the third consecutive day.
- Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), local police, and medical units are working tirelessly in the Kuntri and Dhurma villages, where six houses were buried under debris.
Infrastructure Damage and Livelihood Impact Assessed
Uttarakhand’s Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Secretary Mr. Vinod Kumar Suman briefed the media, reporting damage to 45 residential buildings and 15 cow shelters. Additionally, 28 animals are missing and four have been confirmed dead.
The administration has begun air-dropping essential supplies to remote and inaccessible areas, and temporary shelters have been set up for displaced families. Mr. Suman stated that future actions will be undertaken based on public feedback, submitted applications, and evolving ground requirements.
Government Ensures Timely Response and Support
The Uttarakhand government has adopted a proactive and people-centric approach, ensuring quick deployment of search and rescue units and seamless coordination among administrative and emergency services. CM Mr. Dhami’s ground visit is seen as a symbol of responsive governance, focusing on disaster preparedness, immediate relief, and long-term rehabilitation.
The Chief Minister has directed officials to continue round-the-clock operations and emphasized the importance of community outreach and mental health support for affected residents.
