Uttarakhand Chief Minister Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami, while inspecting disaster-affected areas in Tharali, Chamoli district, paused his convoy to personally listen to the grievances of villagers. Many residents urged him to expedite road clearance to upper villages. Responding, Mr. Dhami assured that road restoration was underway on a war footing and that he would personally visit once conditions permitted.
Relief and rescue operations on war footing
During his visit, Mr. Dhami interacted with disaster-affected families and inspected relief camps in the Kulsari area of Chamoli. He directed officials to ensure 24/7 relief and rescue operations, emphasizing that no stone would be left unturned. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration are working tirelessly to evacuate stranded residents, restore roads, electricity, and water supply, and clear debris.
Financial aid and rehabilitation measures
The Chief Minister announced financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh each for families who lost their loved ones and those whose houses were fully destroyed. He also assured medical treatment for the injured and directed officials to initiate rehabilitation measures for the homeless. Families affected by partial damage are also being supported with government aid. Relief camps have been equipped with food, medicines, bedding, milk for children, and sanitation facilities to ensure proper care.
Scientific study for disaster preparedness
Mr. Dhami emphasized the importance of long-term disaster mitigation. He directed that a detailed scientific study be conducted on glacial moraine and river systems in Himalayan regions by institutions such as Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, IITs, IIRS, and NRSC. He also urged the central government to extend such studies across all Himalayan states for better disaster preparedness.
Local administration praised for swift response
The Chief Minister appreciated the Chamoli District Magistrate and local administration for their immediate action in launching rescue operations. He highlighted that timely responses reduce the impact of such natural calamities. To prevent future damage, he also suggested dredging and channelization of rivers near populated areas to avoid debris accumulation.
Tharali disaster impact
The devastation in Tharali followed a sudden surge in the Tunari seasonal stream on August 22. The flash floods destroyed homes, shops, the Tehsil office, and the SDM residence. Tragically, a young woman lost her life, while another person remains missing. Around 150 residents were safely relocated to higher ground, reflecting the efficiency of evacuation efforts.
