Dehradun: In a major step toward strengthening rural livelihoods and supporting security forces, the Uttarakhand government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police under the Vibrant Village Programme.
The agreement was signed at the Chief Minister’s residence in the presence of Pushkar Singh Dhami.
Fresh Local Produce for ITBP Jawans
Under this MoU, battalions of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police stationed in Uttarakhand will be supplied with fresh, high-quality, and nutritious fruits and vegetables sourced locally.
This initiative aims to ensure better nutrition for jawans while promoting the use of locally grown produce.
Boost for Farmers in Border Areas
The agreement between ITBP and the Uttarakhand Horticulture Board is expected to significantly benefit farmers, especially in remote and border districts such as:
- Chamoli
- Uttarkashi
- Pithoragarh
- Champawat
- Dehradun
By creating a stable market for agricultural produce, the initiative will help farmers secure fair prices and improve their livelihoods.
₹14.77 Crore Worth Local Purchases Already Made
Officials highlighted that the Indo-Tibetan Border Police has already procured local produce worth ₹14.77 crore, with efforts underway to further increase procurement.
If ITBP sources even 25% of its annual fruit and vegetable requirements locally, farmers could collectively earn around ₹6 crore annually.
Strengthening Local Economy and Supply Chains
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the MoU as a significant step toward holistic development of border areas.
He emphasized that the initiative will:
- Strengthen farmers’ economic conditions
- Improve market access in remote regions
- Promote local products
- Support the welfare of security personnel
Government’s Commitment to Farmers and Forces
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting farmers’ interests while ensuring the well-being of security forces.
The collaboration is expected to create a win-win situation, enhancing both rural incomes and the quality of food supplied to jawans stationed in challenging terrains.
Key Dignitaries Present
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Ganesh Joshi, along with senior officials from agriculture, horticulture, and ITBP departments, marking a coordinated effort between multiple stakeholders.
A Step Towards Self-Reliant Border Villages
The initiative aligns with the broader vision of the Vibrant Village Programme, focusing on self-reliance, economic growth, and improved infrastructure in India’s border regions. It is expected to serve as a model for similar collaborations across other states.
