Vedanta Aluminium has entered into a gas sales agreement with GAIL Gas Ltd, a subsidiary of state-owned GAIL (India) Ltd, to supply natural gas to its smelter in Jharsuguda, Odisha. This agreement is part of the company’s efforts to lower its carbon footprint and reduce emissions. By transitioning to natural gas, Vedanta expects to cut 47,292 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions annually.
The transition, set to be operational by end of next year, includes the construction of a 7.5-km pipeline by GAIL Gas Ltd, which will supply 32,000 standard cubic meters of natural gas per day. The agreement spans five years, starting once the pipeline is commissioned.
This move aligns with Vedanta’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, incorporating renewable energy usage and afforestation efforts to create carbon sinks.
Vedanta Aluminium’s Chief Operating Officer Sunil Gupta emphasized that this partnership with GAIL is crucial for reducing carbon emissions while meeting the increasing demand for aluminium in critical sectors. In FY24, the company produced 2.37 million tonnes of aluminium. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-executive Director at Vedanta, further highlighted the company’s commitment to embracing cleaner energy solutions.
